Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey is but the latest incarnation (and modern name) of the story structure pattern that is representative of successful and effective stories.
This structural pattern has been known and utilised before Joseph Campbell's analysis (and is therefore not simply a Hollywood construct): Shakespeare used this pattern; stories before Joseph Campbell's time used this pattern (Casablanca, 1942; Red River, 1948).

Charlie's Ordinary World is “being a good time congressman” and is expressed initially being found in the Jacuzzi with the strippers.
A foreshadow of the coming journey is indicated by the Dan Rather story of the Mujahaddin in Afghanistan . This is linked to the Call to Adventure.
The Hero in this case (Charlie Wilson) is pushed out of his Ordinary Self by asking the budget to be doubled from $5m to $10m. This gets the attention of the Supernatural Aid, who in this case is Julia Roberts playing Joanne Herring.
It is the Supernatural Aid that pushes the Hero to the edge of his Ordinary World (invites Charlie to Texas ). The Magical Gift in this case is her bedroom.
The Supernatural Aid pushes the Hero onto a Journey (out of his Ordinary World and where the Newer Self begins to realise itself) to Pakistan . This is essentially the pushing into the First Threshold and beyond (the Belly of the Whale; the rundown at the US Embassy).
The Road of Trials begins when Charlie returns home and meets with Gust Avrakotos (Phi8lip Seymour Hoffman), who is actually the Transformation Mentor. It is the Transformation Mentor that guides the Hero through the Road of Trials here.
The Road of Trials ends with the budget gradually increasing and involves persuading reluctant senators, including the chairman of the sub-committee.
The Sword is Seized or attained when we see the Afghans shooting down the Russian choppers and this is followed by the Mystical Marriage (Joanne Herring's marriage).
